Kent Libraries, Registration & Archives are encouraging residents in Whitstable to participate in a project which is part of the WhitLit Festival. Organisers distributed 150 copies of the book- ‘Cake and Ale’ by Somerset Maugham, for free outside the town library, in a bid to get the whole town reading the book. They also handed out MemMaps, maps of Whitstable. The copies are given free, as part of the festival, in partnership with the publishers Random House.
Several of this first literature festival’s events connect with W. Somerset Maugham and his early years spent here in Whitstable. Organisers of WhitLit festival are paying homage to the author. They include his play- ‘Mr.Maugham at Home’ to be hosted at the Playhouse on 8 May (Thursday). There will be a screening of a documentary on him. A debate will be held with his family and his biographer, on 9 May (Friday). A walk through Maugham’s Whitstablr and an afternoon tea, with a book sale, will be held at All Saints Church on 9 May (Saturday). More details are available at www.whitlit.co.uk.
