Free workshop on songwriting at Leeds

A free workshop on song-writing will be held on 4th October (Sunday), in Leeds. The one hour Song-writing Workshop will be run by Luke Concannon and Jimmy Davis, at the Mill-Hill Chapel, which is on Lower Basinghall Street, in City Square. The one-hour workshop will start at 3:00pm in the afternoon, on the same day of Sunday as when they will be have a gig at the chapel. A half price ticket too will be offered to all attending the workshop.

Luke Concannon is best known for his ‘JCB Song’, that was a chart-topper, with folk hip-hop duo Nizlopi. Jimmy Davis is regarded as one of the finest underground radical lyricist and hop-hop songwriter of England. Luke and Jimmy have over two decades of experience in song-writing, recording and performing. They will be sharing here what they have learnt. They believe as a human we all have the ability to create music and to also to tell stories. They wish to help the attendees start writing or if already on it, help each other and to inspire them for better. Participants can bring their instruments too, to the one-hour free session on song-writing, which is open to all ages and abilities. Children aged under 12 years should be accompanied by an adult.

 

Ballot opens for free tickets to Somme Centenary ceremonies

To attend the ceremonies marking the centenary of the Battle of Somme falling next year , the members of the public have been invited to join the ballot for free tickets. They can put name down for free tickets to the daily ceremonies in France, started on 28th September and ending on 18th November, the day the battle ended, after a 141-day period in the year 1916.

The commemorations will begin on the eve of the centenary day on 30th June 2016, with a vigil at the Thiepval memorial. Free tickets will be given for the events up till 18th November. On 1st July there will be a grand international ceremony. There will also be events across the UK to mark the anniversary. S,o go on and put in your name for the ballot for free tickets.

In the Battle of Somme the British troops intended to make a swift break through the German lines but it became a stalemate, as the Germans had dug in early. The first day of the Battle cost 60,000 casualties and 20,000 deaths for the British. The next 140 days saw 600,000 lives lost for the allies, but only a few metres of ground gained. Prime Minister David Cameroon said he hoped to see many joining the ceremonies or travelling to Somme. John Wittingdale, the culture secretary, believed the ceremony at Thiepval would be a moving one.

 

Free workshop on recycling denims

A free workshop will be offered by Southampton Repair Cafe to celebrate its first anniversary on 3rd October. The ream of volunteers here will be showing how to recycle denims. They can be made into new items like toys, bookmarks or bags. It is being held at the The Freemantle United Reformed Church, Southampton. Visitors to the venue can attend from 10:30am to 1:00pm, situated on Shirley Road. While they watch the repairing, they can have tea and homemade cake. The workshop was set up by a group called Transition Southampton and runs it on every first Saturday of the month. The repairs are done free but donations are welcome to run the Cafe. For items that are not repairable or jobs too complex, the volunteers can advice or redirect to professional repair shops here. Future free workshops are at Cobbett Road Library on 7th November and at Mantle URC Church Hall on 5th December.
