Free School opens in Birmingham
Perry Beeches II is one of the 3 new schools opening in Birmingham. Situated on Newhall Street, the school is not run by local authorities, but funded by central government. Education Secretary Michael Gove supported the opening of free schools across England and called it a success so far. The Perry Beeches Academy in Perry Barr, which is one of the most improved schools in the region, is associated with the Perry Beeches II school. Nishkam Secondary School and the East Birmingham Network are also to open soon, free schools. Head Teacher Jackie Powell of Perry Beeches II hopes that this free school will offer children a broad and balanced curriculum and access to what resources of Birmingham can offer. The school has already received 115 applications for the 100 places. 55 new schools are being planned to be opened this September across England, with 24 opened last year. Free schools can be set up by group of parents and teachers or even by trusts, religious or voluntary groups, universities, businesses or charities.
