Blacksmiths gather for St. Clements Day at Sticklepath
The annual gathering of blacksmiths from all parts of the country, at Finch Foundry in Sticklepath (Dartmoor), to celebrate St. Clement’s Day, falls on19th November this year. Following a medieval tradition to celebrate their patron saint, Saint Clements, and to practise their art, blacksmiths gather at this National Trust property- the Finch Foundry. This is the last water-powered forge, working in the country, made as the venue and presents a unique ‘firing of the anvil’.
There’s also ‘The Great Snail Race’ competition where competing blacksmiths have to forge in the shortest time possible the ‘Sticklepath Snail’. The event is a free event and everyone is welcome to join and cheer the blacksmiths showing their craft, at a historical venue. The free day starts at 11am and ends at 3:30pm, with winners being given trophies. Local craft sellers, National Trust delicious treats and gifts can be found in the tea-room all through the day. Free entry is allowed to the event, tea-room and gift shop, but normal admission applies to indoor forge areas.
