Re-enactment of Battle of Waterloo in the Borders free event

A re-enactment of the Battle of Waterloo is expected to attract thousands of spectators on 28th June, to Monteviot, on the Lothian Estates, to mark the 200th anniversary of the historic victory over Napoleon and his army. Ian Stark the Olympic eventing hero will also star in the free event portraying Duke of Wellington at the centre stage.

The event will be acted around the Battle of Waterloo monument, a 150-foot tall monument, one of the most recognised landmarks of the Borders, on the Lothian Estates, 10 days after the actual day of the anniversary. Over 300 horses and riders are expected to take part, in a series of re-enactments. Displays from military and pipe bands, lighting of a bonfire before fireworks and a Beating of the Retreat will entertain the spectators.

The free event has been inspired by Michael Ancram, the 13th Marquess of Lothian and former Conservatory party chairman. The Penielheugh 200 event, which will be narrated by Peter Snow, historian and broadcaster, will celebrate the role of four regiments of Scots in the famous battle. The last fought by Napoleon.

Free events at Ledbury Community Day

There will be free events at the Ledbury Community Day to be held on 6th June (Saturday) at the Herefordshire market town of Ledbury. The event is expected to be as successful as last year’s celebrations. Most events will be held between 10:00am and 2:00pm. Griff Holliday, spokesman for the event, said that last year saw 65 groups and organisations participating and this year so far 30 have confirmed to take part again, with more of others to follow. He added that one can find out more about everything from ornithology to bowls and tennis, from horticulture to local food, from cycling to canals. Lots of voluntary organisations and groups will be present to interact, he pointed out. He also said this year will have more to see, as they celebrate with special features the reopening of the Master House, after its restoration. The chairman of the organisers, Paul Kinnaird, said the Community Day is the opportunity to know more about the opportunities that local groups and organisations provide. For more information go to website- ledburycommunitydays.org.uk and see in the free event programme.
