Free events during Literature Week by the British Academy
This spring, the British Academy is starting off its biennial Literature Week in London. The celebration starts from 15th May and runs up to 21st May. The theme this year is on adaptations and transformations. Stories or books are being re-told or adapted to another medium often, or transformed completely. Examples are adaptations of Pride and Prejudice and Matilda. These works bring a new experience to a wider audience, reflecting changing tastes and the times.
On 19th May, Friday, the day will see the much awaited’ Off The Page’ evening event. The late event is being held in conjunction with the Royal Society of Literature and is a book-themed event, dedicated to storytelling of all kinds. It will run from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. The event will host workshops, performances and talks, with a literary twist and also features activity and display by Type Tasting and AVM Curiosities. It is a free event and one has to book a place (via website- britac.ac.uk). The week’s 6 days of events will be memorable and enlighten you.
Free tickets to indie documentary Royal
The indie documentary ‘Royal’ tells you the incredible story of ‘Ted’ Owens, a Royal Marine Commando. This latest short film by Kristen Kane and Lewis Carter, is pegged as a tribute to a war hero, one of Britain’s oldest living WW2 Marines. The film-makers reach deep into the incredible life story of the 92 year old Royal Marine Commando. The film follows Ted Owens journey starting from his coastal home, in one of the most remote westerly points of Wales. He reminisces about his life, as he investigates the many barracks across the country, about the role of a commando and how much has changed since the veteran first landed, at the age of 19, on the Sword Beach on 1944.
This truly inspirational story has been put into a balanced piece of work, beautifully made as part historical documentary and part character driven drama. The ‘moving documentary’ by Kane and Carter is far from their previous Campfire Story, a horror-comedy. The finished film is to be debuted at the end of this month, with the premiere in Haverfordwest, the home-town of Ted Owens. It will be shown on 31st March (Friday) at Merlin’s Theatre. Free tickets are available from the site- finerollingmedia.co.uk/royalfilmpremiere.
