Free exhibition on 150th year of Northampton Museums
Northampton Museums and Art Gallery is celebrating its 150th year by opening an exhibition this weekend, which will run from 1st August (Saturday) to 15th November, (Sunday). Entry is free to the exhibition which will showcase 150 objects that will celebrate the diversity of the museum’s collections and also feature well-known objects, along with those of Abington Park Museum, collected over the years. The exhibition is separated into 5 sections, such as- foundation objects, 1865 to 1914, 1915 to 1964, 1965 to 2015 and recent acquisitions.
The museum was founded on 9th November, 1865, with a committee appointed to develop the museum. In 1884 the museum was moved to the building on Guildhall Road, where it currently stands. The library there on the ground floor was moved to Abington Street in 1910, its current home, to give space for the museum to occupy. Cabinet member for community engagement, councillor Brandon Eldred, said the exhibition is a fantastic celebration and hoped as many people as possible will come and discover the gems that the free exhibition has to offer.
