Free events and shows at Croydon’s Ambition Festival
Croydon’s most auspicious cultural event , the Ambition Festival, is about to start in its first year (2015). Top talents, original entertainment and exciting newcomers have put Croydon (South London) straight into highlight. The acts across the borough , in various venues, around the town centre, offer something for everyone as it is affordable, accessible and mostly child-friendly. Choose from a range of choices, buy tickets for only what you want. There are 5 free stages up for the event over the weekend, like one outside the Fairfields Halls, others over at Ruskin Square and town hall, for the festival weekend of 25th and 26th July.
Old Town hosts a large family area with fun planned for children. There’s pop-up comedy of Blunderbus, of the Debarred Unleashed, Femmetamorphosis at Ashcroft Theatre. Spreadeagle pub theatre is hosting Musical Bingo. There’s also an interactive dance workshop running in the weekend, besides the free events. The festival is great fun, a celebration of the talent and the potential of the town. This is Croydon’s ability to host a great party and everyone is invited to join in.
Free performance, ‘Once Upon A Twisted Tale” at Heaton Park
A performance of ‘Once Upon A Twisted Tale’ will be staged by contemporary dancers at Heaton Park (Manchester) on 16th August, Sunday. Contemporary dancers of the Northern School of Contemporary Dace, will perform along with classical musicians. The production by the Tangle Dance Company will have the audience follow the characters through the grounds of the park, as the story is unfolded by the contemporary dancers. The performance by the trained dancers of the dance school will occur 3 times throughout the day. The performances will start outside the Farm Centre at Noon, at 2:00pm and at 4:00pm., and will last for about 40 minutes each. The free event is suitable for all ages and also includes a workshop for children to conclude.
Upfest, biggest free street art festival returns
The 8th edition of Upfest will colour the streets of Bedminster and south Bristol from 25th to 27th July, to host the largest street art festival in Europe, that gets better and bigger every year. It started with 10 artists and now has grown to 275, according to Steve Hayle, founder and organiser.
A lot of hard work and passion goes to organise this large free event, with very limited public funding. Local businesses that appreciate the event and successful artists continue to support the festival. The Kickstarter crowd-funding has this time helped the festival to be enhanced. The many high-calibre artists make Upfest very special, with 100 international artists registered, representing 25 countries. Besides artists from across Europe and USA, they’re also coming from South America and even from Russia, UAE and Georgia for the first time.
Some 275 artists will be painting live. There’s a great line-up of music andthe workshops of Miss C’s graffiti academy. People can buy art at the 3 art-fair areas, which also support the festival. The festival continues to support local talent. Becoming a more family-oriented event over the years, it just coincides with the summer holidays. So, 27th July, Monday, is public-viewing day, with a number of children workshops by many artists. A third of artists attending the free festival come from the Bristol region, which is still a breeding ground for creative talent. Upfest supports the charity NACOA (National Association for Children of Alcoholics).
