Free music workshop by Zimbabwean band

A free one-day music workshop will be held on 28th February, Saturday, at the St. Cuthbert Centre in Church Hill, Crook, between 10.30AM and 3.30PM. The free workshop is being hosted by Jack Drum Arts with the Heritage-Survival Band of Zimbabwe, and is open to children, the young and also adults. This is part of the Adult and Community Learning-Programme.

The exceptionally brilliant group of musicians, Zee Guveya and Heritage-Survival Band, come from the capital city Harare of Zimbabwe. The band’s performance offers familiar traditional rhythms with modern influences. Their compelling Afro-fusion style dance-beat, mixed with a measure of reggae into their upbeat hypnotic Zimbabwean music, is sure to enthral. There will be an introduction to Zimbabwean cultural history, to Diembe Drumming, to Mbira-Thumb piano playing and even dance. After the free workshop, they will be performing at the Frosterley Village Hall. Tickets will be issued for this at Highlights over phone 01388-52639 (or go to the site- highlightsnorth.co.uk for information).

Free event on ‘Navigation’ at Cirencester Masonic Hall

A free event on aircraft navigation will be held at the Cirencester Masonic Hall, which is situated at the Avenue, in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, and starts at 6PM, on 2nd March, Monday. The session will have former Hercules pilot from RAF Lyneham, the Worshipful Brother Mike Easley, answering questions and other things, besides addressing the participants with his talk – ‘Navigation’ to them. He is a navigation expert and also will be talking about its history and the connection with the Free Masons. Topics like how GPS works and how the stars were used to navigate by pilots earlier, or what causes the spectacle of Northern Lights, will be discussed, at the free event. Cirencester Free Masons Support sources all its funds internally and supports many local charities.

Free event, a BBC comedy show, coming to Barnard Castle

A free event will be held in Barnard Castle, which is the show- ‘Mark Steel’s In Town’, on 28th April, Tuesday. The hit BBC Radio 4 show will be performed and recorded at the Witham, in Barnard Castle, starting at 7:00PM. The BBC Radio 4’s Mr. Steel is a comedian, author and columnist who visits 6 towns every year to make one show of the episode based on the town he visits. He visits the place, researches its history, meets its people, talks to locals, then works out its idiosyncrasies and ingredients that combine to make the place distinctive. He will then perform a stand-up comedy show, tailor-made for the town, in front of the local audience.

Organiser Mr. Peter Dixon, of the town’s club, Funny Way To Be, says the producer of the comedy series talked to them and soon realised that Barnard Castle to be the right place for the comedy series. He found the place to be full of history and character. Then BBC took it up.
