First ever free HIV treatment on the NHS
For the first time in the history of NHS, foreigners to Britain will be given HIV treatment at free of cost. Foreign visitors including students, human trafficking victims and workers will be benefited with this service. Free HIV treatment will be given in addition to what the residents of Britain are already enjoying except for the migrants there. But currently, free HIV treatment has been extended to all those who have been in Britain for at least 6 months. This proposal will be introduced in a Statutory Instrument and will be accepted by the Government. Also, it has been introduced owing to the rise in HIV infection among many including foreigners who are being deterred from getting any assistance.
This move is sure to help Britain in bringing under control the spread of HIV disease into the public. It can also help to stop the spread of disease to others. According to Professor Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer, proper treatment has reduced the spread of disease to upto 96%. Also, the director of policy at the National Aids Trust, Yusef Azad, said that the cost of treating HIV disease at its crucial stage will be more when compared to the treatment done in its initial stages.
Department of Health aides say that it would not benefit anyone coming to the UK specifically for the free treatment as the duration taken for administration and monitoring is long. However, foreigners who are already in the UK can avail free treatment without the fear of ‘health tourism’ abuse.
