The skies above the Southsea Commons, Portsmouth, will again be cluttered with countless number of kites in all sizes and shapes. The free to watch event will be held between 10am and 5pm, over the weekend of 12th and 13th August. Once again organised by the Kite Society of Great Britain and the Portsmouth City Council jointly, the 28th Portsmouth International Kite Festival is one of the 23 biggest kite festivals around the globe.
Organisers expect to have kites and their fliers from the 6 continents of the world. Besides British kite fliers, others already slated include fliers from across Europe, North and South America, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia and China. Visitors and enthusiasts can enjoy and admire the many kites in the sky and the ground, plus the spectacular demonstrations of the art of kite making and flying.
The free event at Portsmouth in 2016, set a new world record for the most number of Trilobite Kites flying together at 21 in total. The record was beaten with 30 flown in the USA. But this year kite fliers intend to break it again at Portsmouth. Other activities here include local amusements, a children’s kite workshop for free, a craft marquee and kite traders with their variety of wares in the common.
