Spectacular Freedom Festival again to light up Hull

September 1st, 2016 by Sandy

The Freedom Festival will be hosted in Hull, from 2nd September (Friday) to 4th September (Sunday), across the Yorkshire city’s Fruit Market, Hull Truck Centre, Queens Gardens, Marina and City Centre. Not only is the Freedom Festival a great spectacle but is also a cultural arts extravaganza, over the 3 days.

It all started as a street celebration in 2007, as part of the William Wilberforce bicentenary celebrations, marking the abolishment of the slave trade in the British Empire. This has grown to become Hull’s flagship festival now, attracting major attention, both nationally and internationally. The Freedom Festival Arts Trust organises the 3-day festival and is a registered charity and company.

There will be a host of live music acts throughout the festival. Traditional music is highlighted by the performance of Eliza Carthy with her group The Wayward Band. Other acts include the hip hop ensembles Orkestra Del Sol and Abstract Orchestra, with also Ibibo Band Machine, Sowento Kinch, Hull Samba and many others. Other acts highlighted include Danbor Talka (Clash of Drums), the outdoor spectacle ‘As The World Tipped’ by Wired Aerial, Hot Brown Honey, Ray Lee’s Chorus, The Dream Engine by Heliosphere and The People’s Tower. There are also five kid’s shows that they will love.

The free event will see a big launch on Friday night and a pyrotechnic spectacle will light up Humber Quays. This year’s Freedom launch will see a mix of international and home-grown talents in drumming groups, as they start it all with a thunderous bang.
