First run in 2011 as a test event, the RideLondon – Surrey Classic has become the country’s premier 1-day race. The race skipped a year for the London Olympics in 2012, but has since grown into an annual weekend-long festival of cycling, including traffic-free events in London, as the Prudential RideLondon – Surrey Classic pro-race and the hugely popular 100-mile closed road sportive. The cycling event returns on 29th July, Friday and runs till 30th July, Sunday, being held in London and Surrey. The event follows on the same routes run previously, which will see many roads on the routes closed and with nearly 30,000 cyclists taking part.
Many of the bus routes will be affected, either by cancellation or diversion. The event will see road closures effective from 04:00 to 20:00, affecting more than just their immediate RideLondon route, but also areas near the event route, in central, east and south-east London and parts in Surrey too. Buses will be diverted or finish early owing to closures.
The best way to get around on the day in central London, will be by rail and tube. Some stations, before and after the event, are expected to be busier than usual. Motorists may experience delays of nearly 35 minutes and in central London may not be able to cross the race route. Journeys will be via a busy M25, from west to south or south-east London. Open throughout the day will be the A4 eastbound only. Local residents and businesses only will have access to road on the event routes. Richmond Park on the day will be closed to vehicles.
