Projection of cosmos onto new Durham science centre for opening event

A free multi-media show will mark the opening of a new landmark building of Durham University. Stunning computer simulated images of the Universe will be projected on to the Ogden Centre for Fundamental Physics in celebration, for three consecutive days, opening on 9th March, Thursday.

The £11.5 million building will have ‘Words, Systems and Creation’ projected with music set by Isobel Walter Bridge, and graphics created by Ross Ashton and Karen Monid. Some of it featured at Durham Cathedral in the Lumiere 2015 installation. The show open to public will start on Thursday evening from 6:30pm to 8:30pm and for 2 successive nights. at the Science site. The 8 minute show will be projected 6 times in an hour. Friday and Saturday will see a series of activities that includes a chance to use Universe Creator, watch Cosmic Origins – a 3D movie and a VR experience – “Tour of the Cosmos”.

The angular Ogden Centre will house the Centre for Extragalactic Astronomy, Institute for Computational Cosmology and the Centre for Advanced Instrumentation. Director of the Institute for Computational Cosmology, Prrof. Carlos Fenk, said the new building is an architectural gem in beautiful Durham.

The opening on Thursday will also host a series of high profile talks from 3pm to 6pm at the Geography Building’s Applebey Lecture Theatre, off South Road. The multi-media show is free. Book free tickets for the talks via their website- durham.ac.uk/conference.booking.
