Scotland’s Winter Festivals (2016-17) programme has been unveiled and it has 20 funded events totally. Fiona Hyslop, the Culture Secretary, said the events and activities will be held across the 15 council areas. The celebrations run through Christmas, Hogmanay, St. Andrew’s Day and until Burn’s Night.
The programme has got up to £390,000 funding from the Scottish Government, that includes for events like Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, Glasgow’s torchlight festival and an open Ceilidh in St. Andrews. Government will also provide to help multi-cultural organisations and communities to celebrate events, like the 2016 Year of Innovator, or Burn’s Night, with an additional £54,000.
Historic Environment Scotland’s famous heritage sites and a range of attractions will be offering free entry or 2-for-1 deals during the festival. The programme with a host of free events and activities, is expected to boost tourism, enhance community engagement and raise the international profile of Scotland. The Culture Secretary said they have enhanced the programme this year by including several additional events to reflect the country’s cultural and ethnic diversity.
