Penguin the publisher is celebrating its 80th anniversary and as part of this, passengers commuting on the London Under ground are offered the chance to read excerpts of their new books, author reviews and ideas, for free, this summer. The activity will run from 3rd to 28th August.

Penguin is collaborating with Transport for London (TfL) along with Virgin Media’s WiFi service, to access a dedicated site- summerofpenguin.com, a mobile-first website, whereby commuters will be offered to listen to or read a daily choice of stories while travelling. Graphic Designer Rob Lowe has illustrated the digital experience on the website, with minimal design, created in-house.

The group director of consumer and digital development at Penguin Random House UK, Hannah Telfer, said this collaboration lets the company to deliver content to new audiences, sourced from its authors, such as Terry Pratchett, John Cleese and Harper Lee. She said the partnership takes the written word on pages beyond to the London Underground, inspiring and entertaining its travellers with writing, stories and ideas that helped shape Penguin over the 80 years, showing the incredible talent that is part of the company’s publishing. This follows the publication in January, to mark the beginning of the 80th Birthday celebration, of the Little Black Classics. The free book reading experience online is a great idea and a great summer gift for Penguin fans and others too, travelling the tube.
