A Death Cafe event coming to North Devon will be held on 10th May, from 3:00pm to 4:30pm, at the Raleigh Gallery Restaurant, Level 0, in North Devon District Hospital (NDDH). The free event as part of the Dying Matters Awareness Week and is being led by Pop-Up Death Cafe Devon, who frequently run the Death Cafes across Mid Devon and North Devon.
It is being led by two persons who facilitate Pop-Up Cafe Devon. Anne Bury of Befriending Dying will be there with the small groups of 5 or 6 attendees, sitting together, enjoying tea, coffee and cake, along with Nixie James. The public are invited to come along and participate. They come together, share personal experiences, discuss what death and dying means to them and also consider what may be needed if they or someone they know are dying.
Anne Bury said the event is an opportunity to talk on a topic that we often feel we don’t have permission to discuss. She added that this is personal exploration and not a therapy session, but it doesn’t replace bereavement counselling. Nixie James said talking about dying can help to rid our fear of death, as these events are open, supportive and sometimes funny.
Clinical nurse specialist, Karen Moss, in the palliative care team of North Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, is delighted to have the Dying Matters Week run the free event, Death Cafe, by Pop-Up Death Cafe Devon, running from 8th to 14th May. She wanted to help people to talk more openly about bereavement and death. They will signpost persons to the support available to them, she added.
