The tennis club based in Memorial Park, the Mirfield Tennis Club, is opening its doors this weekend to offer free taster sessions of tennis to both adults and children. On Sunday, 15th May, people of the community are welcome, from 11am to 2pm to the taster, and will be provided tennis balls, rackets and some refreshments at the club based in the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees (West Yorkshire).
The open day will have also mini-tennis matches, led by the coaches, for children aged between 5 and 10. Members will also be available at the courts to hit ball with the teenagers and adults. According to the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), last year’s open day here attracted more than 100 persons, the highest for any club event from north of England. Subsequently, membership rose from 70 to140. A school outreach programme and junior coaching has been set up.
A dedicated core of volunteers pulled Mirfield out of near bankruptcy, to become a thriving facility. The rejuvenated committee was able to secure a grant funding from LTA and the council. It went to resurfacing, improve security and the floodlighting. People interested in trying out the game can join the free taster sessions in the weekend.
