The annual 1940s event at Brighouse will have this year’s theme based on VE Day. The celebration this weekend will be held from 5 June, Friday, to 7 June, Sunday. This celebration is one amoung others that pay tribute to the most memorable aspects of the 1940s (decade) that includes dance music, variety shows, the home front and the make do and mend attitude. Friday will start off the event with big band dances and a play on D-Day veterans, “Le Grand Return”, performed at Central Methodist Church.
Witness over the weekend street dancing and singing. See exhibitions showing wartime Britain; see parades, vintage vehicles, markets, canal boat trips, vintage steam-train and bus rides; see Russian and French Resistance, the Women’s Land Army, even the Luftwaffe; see look-alikes of King George VI and Churchill.
Saturday’s main celebration will be see the BBMF Dakota on a RAF Flypast at 1:20PM. There will be variety shows on Saturday and Sunday evenings. Some of the evening performances are paid but most are free events. A 40s newspaper replica will feature the full programme lined up, for £1, to fund the event.
