Sports Minister David Evenett launched the National Golf Month at the House of Commons. The initiative aims to inspire 100,000 new players to #getgolfing. It has particular focus on women and youngsters, to attract more of them to the game. The launch included a chipping nd putting competition for MPs, Peers and schoolchildren, in the Palace of Westminster. The programme is set up by the British Golf Industry Association (BGIA).
Doug Poole, former chairman of BGIA, is the director of National Golf Month (NGM). He said golf participation was dwindling, but the launch at Parliament and support demonstrates the benefits of the sport. He added that NGM aims to show people how easy it is to #getgolfing and their website (www.fibodo.com/national-golf-month) will help people to try and play golf.
Supporting the initiative, the CEO of R&A, Martin Slumbers, said he is looking forward to NGM and it provides a showcase for the sport. Support also comes from Charley Hull and Melise Reid, the Solheim Cup stars, Ian Poulter, the European Ryder Cup star and also by Tour Pros. Supporting NGM is also BBC Breakfast host, Naga Munchetty, a keen golfer. For NGM, PGA professionals will be running events and they are posted on the website. Depending on the area, different deals will be available. Some pros will be offering lessons and equipment on discount, while some clubs will offer free taster sessions to anyone willing.
