Free screening of Speed Sisters at the White Rock Theatre

November 27th, 2016 by Sandy

The White Rock Theatre in Hastings, East Sussex, will host a free screening on 30th November, at 7:00pm, of the film ‘Speed Sisters’. The Hastings Palestine Solidarity Campaign is presenting the film which is by Amber Fares, the Lebanese/Canadian film maker. The film tackles the issues of gender in racing and also gender in Palestine, with focus on life under occupation in Palestine. The movie has received much acclaim and is seen as a ‘shining example’ of a woman director achieving something against all odds.

Amber Fares initially got development money from international film funders. She later launched two crowd-funding campaigns also. She had said that in the aftermath of 9/11 she wanted to tell a story that would bridge the gap between Canada and the Arab world that was ever growing. She found the perceptions of Arabs in Canada and the US to be wrong. She realized, when she came across the Sped Sisters, this is a story that can help bridge the gap, also realised that these women were doing something totally unexpected and wanted the audience to go back and think after the free screening.
