Parent groups have joined forces to set up a special free school for children having autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) and with social communication and language needs, at Mendip. Parents took the issue last year to the country’s parliament and the minister for Special Educational Needs, and also gave their input to the SEN Green Paper.
The core group comprises of 6 parents taken from Shepton Mallet, Frome and Wells parent groups. They have children with ASD at Fosse Way School. At the last two OFSTED inspections here, the Fosse Way School was judged outstanding. The highly regarded school is also an academy, with National Support School and Teaching School status.
The parent groups have joined to set up the new school, the Mendip Free School and wish to hear from parents interested in enrolling their children with developmental disability. The groups wish to provide children with autism between ages 5 and 19, a high quality alternative instead of the mainstream schooling. The group has got to gather names of children willing to attend this school at Mendip, in order to take forward the proposal. For more details the parents can either send an email to office@mendipschool.com or call by phone to – 01749 840059 for Mrs. Lear.
