An exhibition of photographs called ‘Salt Of The Earth’, a collection by David Penprase, is on show in Newlyn, at the Fisherman’s Mission. It is open from 7:30AM to 1:30PM and from Monday to Friday. This exhibition has raised for maritime charity in just 3 weeks, more than £15,000 and so is to be extended until Christmas. The collection of images, black and white photographs of people in the port, were shot from a fish loft during the summer, and they have now been published as a glossy book. The book ‘Salt Of The Earth’ is available for £20, at the Fisherman’s Mission and David Barron Green Hut. Admission is free to the exhibition.
David and wife, a couple from Porthleven, use their unique skills to raise funds for good causes. The idea of capturing a series of images of the Cornish fishing industry as seen today, was suggested by Julian Waring of The Fisherman’s Mission, earlier this year, when he approached them. The couple used a fishnet loft borrowed from Shaun and Anthony Stevenson. They photographed men going to sea, women with them, the service and business, the children seen in the port and even their catch of fish. They shot more than four hundred members of the fishing community here, over 10 sessions on 12hr shifts in a day. Born in Redruth, a man of many parts, David Penprase is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society too. For more information contact on phone-01736 363499.
