The Grange Park golf club is marking its 125th anniversary by offering free taster sessions in this Christmas season, in a special drive to motivate more women to take up the sport. This St. Helens golf club, on Prescot Road, launched the 125 Club to encourage newcomers to take up golf and reap its health and social benefits.
The golf club has been offering taster sessions for ladies since 2015. But the club found that although many were interested in taking their golf further, were held back by demands of work and family. A couple of the organisers of the 125 Club explained that ladies attending the tasters mostly were working full time and did not have time available, or competence, to justify their joining a golf club. This sparked the idea for the 125th Anniversary Membership. This new membership category has subscription rates reflecting the limited amount of golf played by beginner ladies and marked the anniversary too. The new category provides the means and organised support to develop the game of beginner ladies.
The ‘Get into Golf’ national campaign encourages adults to take up golf and is run by England Golf Partnership, supported by Sport England with funding by National Lottery, which is run through the County Golf Development Groups network. Opportunities to the sport include Free Taster sessions and beginner courses with PGA professionals at low cost. Visit the website getinotgolf.org to see the activity map to find the nearest centre.
