Free events remembering the raids on North Sea coast

December 14th, 2014 by Sandy

Commemorations and events are planned for the 16th December, as it marks the 100th Anniversary of the bombardments in 1914, done by the Imperial German Navy on Hartlepool and Scarborough. Relatives of the 18 killed then in the First World War attack on the North Sea resort would be invited for the event.

Act of Remembrance will be held in the three towns of Scarborough, Hartlepool and Witby, that came under fire 100 years ago. A maroon in Scarborough will be fired from the medieval castle, at a ceremony which starts at 7.55AM organised by Scarborough Borough Council. A wreath will be laid in a ceremony at 1.30PM at the Manor Road Cemetery, where a new memorial cairn is erected in memory.

An all-day free event – ‘Hartlepool Remembered: Legacies of the Bombardment – 1914’, was held on 11th December, 2014. Remembrance will be held at Heugh Battery Museum on 16th December where the coastal guns returned fire on the German navy, where 127 people, many of them civilians, were killed. The Hartlepool Town Hall in Hartlepool will hold a performance of “Homecoming”, the outdoor theatre show created by Periplum theatre company.

More details of the free events can be found on sites of Scarborough Borough Council and Heugh Battery Museum. Free entry to the Homecoming performance is by tickets only, booked online (http://worldwar1trenchart.wordpress.com/hartlepool-remembered/).
