The Great Dawley Town council is planning with its partners and community to celebrate the 140th anniversary of Captain Webb’s achievement. Captain Webb is the first person to swim the English Channel and to mark the occasion, celebrations will start from 24th July, Friday, and run until 24th August, Monday, of this year. Each day will have a different free event or activity that the community can enjoy. The celebration kicks off with the launching of a Geocaching location in Great Dawley. The town council will be holding a family day with free activities and performances on 25th July, the Malinslee and Dawley Bank Day, which will be hosted at St. Leonard’s field from 11AM to 4PM along with the Prince George Field, off the Alma Avenue in Malinslee.
A series of free events and activities are lined up, that includes football zorbs, live music, climbing wall and much more. Some of the other events include Art Competition themed on Captain Webb, Lifesaving Skills by Telford & Wrekin Leisure, tennis coaching and competition, music in the Band Stand, film show at Dawley Town Hall, residents to swim at Abraham Darby the 22 miles, planting at Dawley Park and much more events. Dawley Day was shifted to 22nd August by the town council to include it in the celebrations. The events programme will conclude with yet another free event, a street party & picnic, by the Captain Webb memorial, in Dawley Street, where the council invites everyone to come and enjoy at 12 Noon.
