Free events, giveaways to celebrate Book Week Scotland

October 16th, 2014 by Sandy

The Book Week Scotland programme will be running from 24th to 30th November. The programme features hundreds of free events across the country, with free books as giveaway and unveiling of 5 big art installations. The event will focus on work of libraries. Readers will be requested to write to their local library a “love letter”. A five part poem to a library by the leading Scottish poet, Jackie Kay, forms the basis for artworks that will be appearing in Edinburgh, East Lothian, East Dunbartonshire, North Ayrshire and the Shetland Islands.

The Scottish Book Trust has short-listed 50 characters from Scottish books, which will be put to a reader’s poll, to find the nation’s favourite character. Among the 50 characters are Begbie, Sherlock Holmes, Dennis the Menace and Harry Potter. The week of free events will also unveil the results of the poll. Scotland’s Stories of Home, a short story and poem collection, will be distributed free. Some 150,000 copies of it will be given away free via libraries and bookshops throughout the week.
