Chinese New Year, also known as The Spring Festival, falls on 8th February, Monday, is one of the most important holidays of the Asian calendar. Nottingham and the wider county will be having free events and celebrations for this occasion.
Hockley will be celebrating on 6th February, at Oriental Mart, Heathcoat Street. The free vents will begin with a traditional Lion Dance at noon. Food tasting stalls will be open at the event. A culmination of the celebration is the Spring Festival Finale on 14th February (Sunday), at Highfields Park, featuring fireworks and much more. Fun events are planned at Lakeside Arts. Visual artist in residence, Jian Hong Sheng, of Ningbo, the Chinese sister city of Nottingham, will be running workshops and master-classes, from 11 January to 6 February. Rong Tao will be working with artists and dancers, until 14 February.
On 13th February Saturday, the Broxtowe Borough Council, will have a free event, the Spring Festival, at Beeston Square, from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. Find here lion and dragon dance, traditional and contemporary dance, martial arts demonstrations, a lantern parade, fireworks display and more. A special Chinese New Year themed menu will be offered by Mr. Man’s Restaurant, in Wollaton. There’s fireworks too on 5, 6 and 12 February.
A Chinese New Year party with traditional Chinese buffet will be offered at Alea Casino, on 7 February, with lion dance, prize draw and Karaoke. February 13 will see an arts and crafts session hosted at Civic Centre, Arnot-Hill Park, from 1:00pm to 2:30pm and 3:00pm to 5:00pm. Free events include a lantern parade around the lake, but booking is needed.
