Wirral’s local history month will be hosting a series of free events and talks at libraries across the borough. From 3rd April to 27th April, this metropolitan borough of Merseyside will be revealing the ancient and also more recent history of the region, including shedding light on links to its Viking past and to The Beatles.
Two talks highlight on the Viking history of the area, believed to be the first landing point of the Nordic invaders and to have become during occupation a mini-Viking state, complete with its own trading post, borders, customs and even language.
The first talk on 10th April (Monday) will be Viking Voices, presented by the Bebington Central Library, by Paul Vincent. On 20th April (Thursday), Prof. Stephan Handing, renowned Viking expert from Nottingham University, will talk at the Wallasey Central Library, on the borough’s Viking past. Also on this Thursday, a talk focusing on Wirral’s links with The Beatles, will be at Babington Central Library.
Other events include a special fair, at West Kirby Central Library, on Local History Month, on 8th April (Saturday), featuring displays from West Kirby Museum, Wallasey Historical Association, Liverpool University and others.
