A range of free events will be hosted during the Inverness Science Festival starting on 1st May, by the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) in the Scottish Highlands. The 10-day event will be launched with a discussion on the DNA of Scottish clan members and also genealogy expert Alastair Macdonald will tell how people will be able to trace their family history using this science. He will discuss on how various northern clans, like the Mackenzies or the Sutherlands, can trace their history and heritage using DNA science. Also included in the science festival will be a family fun day at Inverness Leisure Centre, a weather talk, a badge-making session and children can learn about common insects at Simpson’s Garden Centre. Running along the public programme will be school events featuring activities like a renewable energy debate, a lecture on big bang chemistry and a maths masterclass.

The Inverness Science Festival 2015 will run from 1st May, Friday, to 10th May, Sunday. This year the festival and free events are being organised by the team at Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) of the university. Derek Gomes, the engagement officer of the university, said they hoped that with the diverse range of programmes, people of all ages and interests will be interested and inspire them to find out more about science.
