Evesham will the hosting celebrations for the 750th anniversary of the Battle of Evesham for two weeks. Evesham (Worcestershire) will commemorate the 750th anniversary from 1st August (Saturday) starting in Abbey Park, at 10:30am, with the Commemoration and Democracy Day. Presiding at the event will be the Bishop of Dudley, Rt. Rev. Graham Usher. Dignitaries attending include John Becrow MP, Speaker of the House of Commons, Lt. Col. Patrick Holcroft the Lord Lieutenant for Worcestershire and Fred Kaler, Mayor of Eversham.
The two weeks will be filled with free events including memorial services, walks, lectures and talks, tapestry displays and workshops. There will be Battle of Evesham walk, tour by boat and coach. On 8th and 9th of August will be held a mediaeval festival weekend. The Montford’s Supper will be hosted on 15th August. The biggest attraction will be the re-enactment of the mid-13th century battle. Visitors will see sword fights, mediaeval living, see craft stalls, enjoy food, drink, musical entertainment and much more.
Battle of Evesham organiser, Antonia Coles, said this special anniversary will be packed with many things for all in the family. There will be full battle enactments each day and also a farm and craft market and skilled craft people, the organiser added. The actual Battle of Evesham happened during the English Civil War, as one of the main battles in 1265. Following the battle between Royalist forces with Prince Edward in the lead and a group of barons, the 6th Earl of Leicester, Simon de Montfort, was defeated and killed. The free event presents one of the biggest re-enactments of mid-13th century in the country.
