Free event at Thurrock to mark Holocaust Memorial Day

January 24th, 2017 by Sandy

Thurrock will be hosting a free event on 27th January (Friday)), to mark the International Holocaust Memorial Day, at High View Avenue Memorial Gardens in Grays. The day not only commemorates past genocides and honours the lost lives, but also stands with those who had survived.

The free memorial event will start at 11am and the service will include placing on the newly refurbished memorial, pebbles by people, as in previous years. A group of young people who had attended the event in 2014, felt laying pebbles was not enough. The group raised £600 to build, what is now in place, a permanent display. Madstone Ltd, stonemasons of East Tilbury, donated their work and sponsorship to finish the memorial.

On the evening of 27th January, another event will be hosted later at Thameside Theatre’, between 4:30pm-6pm. The ‘Holocaust Remembered’ event is to be hosted by Woodside Academy, with partner schools across Thurrock supporting it. The event will showcase stories, poetry and readings.

The Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Councillor Sue MacPherson, said the day is always so moving and a reminder to all of where blind discrimination and bullying will lead us to. She said the terrible events should not be forgotten and not allowed to be repeated in the future. Details about the free events at this borough in Essex are available at the site- thorrock.gov.uk/events.
