What is believed to be the first community gym at Salford, Greater Manchester, has opened its doors at the place provided at the Abbot Lodge of the Salvation Army Housing Association. The accommodation for the homeless in Duchy has the new fitness centre and is named as Little Gym. The new gym has been fitted out with the latest fitness equipment, which includes a rowing machine, treadmill, exercise bike and power plates. The gym would be available to residents of the Duchy Estate and vulnerable people to improve health.
The idea of the gym came from the staff of the housing association. Then Duchy-Residents-Association had sought for funding, applying through ‘Your-Salix, Your-Say’ grant, to Salix homes, the housing provider that gives grants to communities for worthwhile projects. Project Manager at Abbott Lodge, Adele McGill said, with Salix Homes they achieved their aim of providing a way to most vulnerable people here to get better health. The Director, Customer & Neighbourhood Services, Sue Sutton, at Salix Homes, said the gym is a fantastic facility benefiting the whole community and believed to be the first free community gym in Salford.
