Ed Davey, Climate Change secretary said that elderly folks in the UK would miss out on free bus passes and free TV licenses. By cutting the winter fuel allowances from the elderly folks aged between 60 and 65, £1.4billion could be saved annually, said Chris Nicholson an adviser to Ed Davey. Under the Motability scheme, disabled people who want a new car should wait longer. The money saves from this plan will help young people with jobs.
Mr. Nicholson said that it is time to readdress the tax and welfare system that supports the old at the expense of young people. He said that offering free bus travel at age 60 didn’t make sense and that the age should be increased to 65. These advantages along with free TV licences for people over 75 should be tested and made available only to pensioners who get enough money to pay tax.
Half of the pensioners’ gets surplus of income tax threshold suggests a DWP figures. By limiting people below the threshold to benefit from winter fuel allowance, free bus travel and free TV licences, significant amount can be saved yearly. Several other proposals were made by Mr Nicholson.
