Emsworth Museum holds oyster boat exhibition

March 31st, 2016 by Sandy

Emsworth Museum is running the first exhibition of this year of the Terror, marking the 10th Anniversary of the relaunch of the oyster boat. There is free admission to the exhibition being held at the museum, which is at 10B North Street, Emsworth, Hampshire. The exhibition is open from 11:30am to 4:30pm on Saturdays and bank holidays. It’s open from 2:30pm to 4:30pm on Sundays. The exhibition holds a fun game too. All entries will be placed in a draw. Two winners will be given free tickets to sail on the Terror during this summer.

The Terror was built in around 1890, to support Emsworth Harbour’s large oyster dredgers that were working then. Emsworth’s oyster industry collapsed suddenly in the early 1900s when local oysters got infected. For many years the boat was left to rot. However, thanks to a project led by Chichester Harbour Conservancy, the boat was imaginatively restored. Terror is now run by volunteers and carries passengers on trips in Chichester Harbour. Visitors get free entry to the exhibition and a stairlift is available.
