Shrewsbury will be celebrating the birthday of Charles Darwin, it’s famous son, with a two-and-a-half week festival next month. The 2018 DarwIN Shrewsbury Festival will be held between 8th February and 24th February, with an exciting schedule to entertain the whole family. From brain-teasing lectures to dance workshops, to a series of fun and interactive events, that will all take place across the town, the fest is set to be bigger and brighter than ever.
The final of the first Shropshire Young thinkers Competition will kick off the festival on 8th February. The finalists of this event run by Morris & Company and the University Centre Shrewsbury, will present to a panel of judges their ‘One Great Idea To Change The World’, at University Centre Shrewsbury. Winners of the 7 to 11 and 12 to 17 age categories, will be presented fantastic prizes and crowned. Tickets can be booked for the judging event at the site- originalshrewbsbury.co.uk/Darwin.
The festival programme has a diverse range of specialist talks, to inspire and engage audiences, including Prof. Martin Rudwick’s memorial lecture. Throughout the festival, there will be guided tours of Darwin’s childhood. The Hive will host an evolution of dace, talk and workshop. Children during the half term can join workshops of The Wildlife Trust and Shrewsbury Museum. On 10th February, there’s a Darwin-themed Park Run. The museum’s Stop Cafe will host Cafe Concert, featuring music of Beethovan, Bartok and Bach, and also musicians Peter Adams and Zoe Beyers.
Shrewbury BID’s Partnership Manager, Aleks Vladimirov, said they are excited about the events for the festival, that celebrates the town as as the origin of independent thinking and to remember a man and his ground-breaking ideas.
