Cyclopark, the Gravesend sporting facility in Kent, will be hosting an awareness event on 29th November, Sunday, to which cyclists will be invited. The free event which is a part of the Road Safety Week (that began on 23 November), will be held from 10:00am to 4:00pm.
The cyclists visiting will get the chance to sit in an articulated lorry, which has been provided by the Dartford depot of DHL Sainsbury’s. Cyclist can see how difficult it is to spot from the cab a bicycle on the road, when driving. This ‘spot the cyclist’ challenge, the event organisers say, is to make people aware of potential dangers on road, with articulated lorries sharing the roads.
The CEO of Cyclopark, Lawrence Tricker, said this event is a community safety event demonstrating the hazard and how restricted the view is from the cab of a lorry. The free event is an experience that can change how you ride a cycle, which could be a life saving decision he added. The transport manager, Raz Razak, at DHL Sainsbury’s, said this is a great community event that highlights dangers while cycling near a lorry and blind spots. Until seated in the driver’s seat of a lorry, people really can’t understand the real risks, but it is not to put off the cyclists, because it is to ensure safety by knowing the hazards and to cycle appropriately and confidently, he added.
