Bradley Stoke holding a Bollywood dance taster session before the festival

April 8th, 2016 by Sandy

The Bradley Stoke Community Festival to be held on 4th June will feature Bollywood dance this year. To feature this dance form, South Gloucestershire Asian Project (SGAP) will be conducting a free taster session of it on 9th April (Saturday), for Women’s Bollywood Dance classes. It will be held at Brook Way Activity Centre from 11:00am to 1:00pm.

Thereafter, there will be 8 practice sessions, to be held before the main performance. These sessions will be run by choreographer Garima Verma and each practice session will cost £35. Bollywood dance is unlike Indian classical dance forms such as Kuchipudi or Bharatnatyam. This dance form integrates contemporary dance moves, like in Hip Hop, and is mixed with traditional moves of Indian dance, not following any distinct style, but combining a variety of dance forms. The term Bollywood refers to the Indian movie industry that is established in Mumbai city. Bollywood dance known for its vibrant colours, glamorous actors and sizzling dance performances, has increasingly been featured in western media.

SGPA has conducted over the years many Indian festival celebrations and cultural events, like Holi or Diwali. It is expected that those in Bradley Stoke interested in Bollywood dace and with a flair for dancing will come to the venue on Saturday and get involved in the free taster session.
