Beach Highland Games to be held in open at Kirkcaldy

August 10th, 2015 by Sandy

A free event will take place on 15th August, Saturday, for which everyone is welcome to Kirkcaldy. It is the first ever Beach Highland Games for which preparations are going on in earnest by the Kirkcaldy4All, the organisers of the event. Christine May was speaking on behalf of the organisers and said they are on the final preparation and have a final meeting to make sure they have got everything organised.

The Beach Highland Games are due to be opened at 10:00AM and events being planned will run until 1:00PM. The parade will start off at 9:45AM from the main viewpoint which is opposite to Volunteers Green and will head to Port Brae and then along to the beach. Kirkcaldy & Central Fife Sports-Council is sponsoring this year’s inaugural event. The only other games known to be conducted on sand is held in Australia.

Andrew Bowie of Kirk Wynd, who runs the Peachy Keen, and former Highland Games competitor, Don Campbell from Lochgelly, are the local men who formed the idea of the free event. The Beach Games therefore would be the first ever full Highland Games to be staged on sand beach. It will feature the popular heavy events, running and also pipe bands and dancing. The organisers of the free event hope for a bumper turnout and encourage spectators to visit the town centre too. It is an opportunity for local fun for everyone, for families, children, grandchildren, grandparents, young people, couples, single people and older people at the waterfront and on the High Street.
