To offer a free-to-use Wi-Fi service in Abington Street, the Northampton Borough Council will be promoting a free Wi-Fi project soon. The council already offers free Wi-Fi on the Market Square, which will compliment this service too. The Wi-Fi hotspot will be offered as a pilot scheme initially for 1 year.

This initiative is part of the town centre regeneration strategy of the Borough Council. It includes the newly launched app- Love Northampton, free to download from the App Store for iPhones. With free internet access available, consumers can find out about offers, events and business in the town centre. Businesses too can promote offers and themselves online.

Leader of Northampton Borough Council, councillor David Macintosh, hoped for footfall increase and welcomed more people to the town centre. Wi-Fi and internet access are important features visitors and shoppers expect, he added. He pointed out that most people carry a smartphone and use it as a tool to find best places to visit, shop or dine. The pilot free Wi-Fi will give people a good reason to come to Northampton, the councillor said.
