There was a strong hand that gripped you firmly when you crossed the road. There was a hairy chest you loved to lie when you were small. There was a big physique behind which you hid. Remember? Yes. Your Dad’s. Each time when he did things for you, you thanked him by murmuring ‘I love You Dad’. Don’t you want to show him how much he means to you one day? Well. You can do that on Father’s Day.
Father’s Day is the result of the feeling of a daughter who wanted to hold her father in pride. Sonora Smart Dodd was that loving daughter, of that of American Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart. She once heard a church sermon about Mother’s Day. That made Dodd think that fatherhood too should have recognition and there should be a day to exchange that paternal bond. William Jackson Smart was a hard working father who raised his children alone, after the death of his wife following the birth of the sixth child.
The first Father’s Day was said to be celebrated on 19th June 1910. It took sometime for the day to get nationally recognized. Many Ministers and authorities spoke in support of this, which ultimately became a permanent national holiday in 1972. Currently, the day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in 52 countries across the globe. This day varies in countries like Serbia, Russia, Italy, Spain, Portugal and more.
The day never had any commercial agendas until 1930s. However, after the formation of National Council for the Promotion of Father’s Day, the day started getting a commercial spoof to boost the sales of the shops. The shops started advertising gifts for Father’s Day, slowly grown up to competitions, special offers and more. Now, it is a major commercial day, offering a huge profit to the merchants.
