Try out sailing at free taster session by Skye Sailing Club
If you fancy sailing, you can try your hand at it, at a free taster session being offered by Skye Sailing Club in 2015, in Portree. To qualify for a free taster session, just stating your interest by sending them an email and they will get in touch with you in 2015 with details of the next sailing season and the dates of the free taster sailing sessions too, in Portree. They will lend you a wetsuit and also buoyancy aid. Adult participants qualifying will be taken out in one of their dinghies with a steer and help you learn the basics of sailing, all in the free taster session.
Portree Harbour currently hosts sailing as a weekday evening activity, during summer. If you join as a member, the Summer Sailing School will help you every week to improve your skills, covering you with a safety boat. You can cruise to shores nearby, or even try racing, and maybe get a chance to move up to keel-boats. If you are interested, sent an email to info@skyesailingclub.com and they will contact you.
Free events at Marsden Jazz Festival of this year
The Marsden Jazz Festival will take place this year from 10th to 12th October. What started 22 years ago as an event to celebrate the refurbishment of the Marsden Mechanics Hall, has become a major event.
This year’s festival will host more than 70 gigs, of which 50 will be free events and to be held in more than 20 venues. A brainchild of the founder of Mikron Theatre Company, Mike Lucas, the event still attracts a large crowd of jazz fans from across the county. A crowd as large as the population of the village visits here. Three quarters come from within a 30-mile radius, say the festival organisers. Marsden transforms itself during the festival with every pub and club hosting events, the park bandstand hosting concerts and a marquee erected in the village centre. Many visitors dress up in period costumes for the gigs.
The Simon Fell work, with World War One origins, will be recorded live for the Jazz on 3 programme for Radio 3, on 11th October. On Saturday too will be a performance by ‘The Sugar Sisters’. The jazz fest is hosting on 10th October Bob Kerr’s trad jazz outfit, Whoopie Band. Sunday will see Doncaster Jazz Orchestra Alumni and Dennis Rollis on trombone, perform. Festival New Stream will host the rising stars of jazz.
