The world’s second largest half-marathon, ‘Bupa Great North Run’, takes place every year in September, between Newcastle and South Shield. All of North East will be celebrating the event this year for it’s going to be the first running event to reach its millionth finish anywhere in our world. It’s being planned for the Quayside this year, on 4th September. The IAAF will be awarding the event for achieving this milestone.
Brendan Foster, Chairman of Nova International, said 10,000 free tickets to the opening ceremony will be offered by Nova International in partnership with The Journal. This ceremony is a weekend long celebration, as curtain raiser to participation in the North East sports events, that precedes the ‘Great-North-Run’.
Anyone who has previously participated in the ‘Great North Run’ during its 33-year history will be given a free ticket, on first come, first served basis. Anyone who ever completed the run can apply for a free ticket. The tickets would be distributed through the ‘Great North Run’ website. They just have to apply before 25th July, entering their first and last names, along with the year they ran. Past participants of the run who already bought a ticket can get the money refunded. Past runners, participating or not, are requested to contribute experiences and memories of the half-marathon. As part of the celebrations are included mass choreography, giant screen film projection onto The Sage Gateshead and other happenings.
