Edinburgh council could bring free Wi-Fi

The new proposals of Edinburgh City Council could connect the streets of the Scottish capital with free Wi-Fi. If their bid win a part of the UK government’s Urban Broadband Fund, the council could help bring free Wi-Fi to the streets. Government has set aide £100 million to help Britain benefit from super-fast broadband.

As per the reports, the proposal will be set up during the next three years. The council not only hopes to connect the city centre with free broadband services but also expects to bring high speed internet to certain parts of Edinburgh. With improved broadband, the area can benefit from a number of social, business and educational opportunities. Free
Wi-Fi will be offered to the areas like Princes Street Gardens and the Meadows that are frequently visited by travellers and tourists. Besides, the tram route to Edinburgh Airport will also be connected with Wi-Fi services.

Cabinet secretary for infrastructure and capital investment, Alex Neil MSP described the proposal of the Scottish government as a part o the digital revolution that is progressing in the country. Mr Neil said that improved internet services will prove very useful, especially for the tourism industry and during the Edinburgh Festivals.

The council has plans to bring free wi-fi provision to aid schools, universities, NHS Scotland and other public sector bodies. Councillor of the Newington and Southside ward, Cameron Rose said that people are waiting for such improved internet services.
