University of Kentucky to hosts First Free to Breathe 5K Walk in the UK
On November 13, Sunday University of Kentucky will put up its first ever ‘Free to Breathe’ 5K Walk in the UK. This national event aims at creating awareness about lung cancer and generating research funding to fight this fatal disease. National Lung Cancer Partnership’s programs for research, education and awareness will be benefited from the earnings received from this event.
Though, lung cancer kills almost twice more woman as breast cancer, it is not sufficiently funded by the government when compared to other types of cancer. The event ‘Free to Breathe’ will help create the awareness about lung cancer among Kentuckians. The generated funds will be used for the treatment and detection of the disease and for saving many lives.
Apart from the walk, numerous educational stalls will be opened to provide proper education on your lung age, nutrition counselling, blood pressure screenings, tobacco cessation, and radon testing.
Lisa Maggio, lung Cancer Advocate and doctoral student in the UK College of Nursing and Gina Kinsella, lung Cancer Advocate and community organizer co-ordinates the Free to Breathe, UK event. Maggio asks everyone at Lexington to participate in the event and do their part in savings many lives.
In 2006, the first ‘Free to Breathe’ event took place in Philadelphia. Ever since, they have been able to collect over GBP 2.26 million with 100 percent of the net earnings used for those affected with lung cancer and to fund programs. Free to Breathe walk will start from Albert B. Chandler Hospital in the UK at 9:15 a.m. Registration time is at 8 a.m. The event will be followed by an award ceremony.
