BT is offering up to 100Mb/s Free Superfast Broadband for athletes participating in the London Olympic Village taking place in London in the summer of 2012. Around 19,000 athletes and officials are going to be involved in the games and BT Infinity will be providing free broadband access to over 2,800 apartments through 65 blocks. The connection is going to be through BT’s FTTP (Fibre to the premises) technology.

The free broadband connection will primarily be available for members residing in apartments in the east London Olympic Village. Participants near Weymouth in the Olympic Sailing Venue, Isle of Portland will also receive BT’s broadband with speeds of up to 40Mb/s. Chris Clark, Director, BT London Games 2010, said that BT is extremely proud to be providing broadband service for the 2010 London Games. BT plan to retain the infrastructure even after the games and the connection will be made openly available to other broadband providers in the UK. Using the connection, site owners or residents will be able to access broadband via BT or through other suppliers too.

BT has announced this free broadband plan following the company’s agreement with the IOC – International Olympic Committee and the LOGOC – London Olympic Games Organising Committee, 2012. Seb Coe, the Chairperson of LOGOC, said that providing basic comforts like broadband for athletes is the heart of their plan and they are happy about the deal with BT. The athletes also feel that a broadband connection will help them stay connected with people, especially coaches who can not always accompany the players.
