Here is a free event for those interested in self-build or custom-built housing. This event on 15th March (Thursday), the Carlisle Self & Custom Build Housing Information Event, is to be hosted at the Carlisle College (in Room G38), Victoria Place. It will open from 6pm and refreshments will be offered from 5:30pm. Carlile City Council has given support and facilitated the evening event, partnering with Andy Lloyd, the Technical Advisor from National Community Land Trust Network (NCLTN).
The free event provides a chance to network with both other self-builders and with industry experts. Different ways and approach to self build will be explored, from commissioning of homes from builders & developers, to doing it yourself, or by a community build scheme by getting together with like-minded people.
The event will have discussions and short presentations by experts and organisations. The introduction by Carlisle City Council, will focus on benefits and potential for self-build in the city. Technical advisor Andy Lloyd of NCLTN, will give examples of group self-build and of individuals from the UK and sources of support. Aims of sustainable co-housing groups in Carlile will be discussed.
Adam and Kate will share about their ‘straw-bale’ self-build in Crosby Ravensworth. Matt Simpson will talk on getting started on the Greystoke site. How housing associations can help with schemes, will be presented by Greg Denwood, of Castles and Coast Housing Association. Eco-arc architect Andrew Yates will speak on consultation methods and project management involved in ‘Passivhaus’ schemes. More information on the free event can be obtained by an email to jeremy.hewiton@carlisle.gov.uk, or by calling up 01228-817519.
