A bigger Chinese New Year event this year coming to Aberdeen university
Chinese New Year will be celebrated at the University of Aberdeen, starting with a fun-packed show for children by its Confucius Institute, at the university, marking the Year of the Dog, on 17 February (Saturday) with more events than ever before. A free Chinese New Year Festival will be held on 18 February (Sunday) with games, arts and crafts and also dumpling making. The Sunday event will feature the traditional dragon and lion dances, music and dance by Harmony Chinese Music Ensemble and the dance group Redphoenix, plus a demonstration by Yee’s Hung-Ga Scotland Kung-Fu. It will be followed by comedy show and performance of students.
By courtesy of the Royal Zoological Society, there will be Yang Guang and Tian Tian, the giant pandas, for Scotland’s ‘Beyond the Panda’ education, to learn more about pandas. The following weekend, the celebrations will move on elsewhere. On 24 February (Saturday,) the university will bring the Chinese New Year to Inverurie Town Ghall, which will feature again Kung-Fu demonstration, fun chopstick skills, music and dance, plus a Chinese shuttlecock game- Jianzi.
The Director of the Confucius Institute, Dr Michelle Macleod, said the festival is shaping to be bigger and better than ever, at the university, with more events. The event last year at Kings College campus had over 800 people attending and this year over 1,000 are expected, across the 4 events planned, she added. For more information on the free event and to register your interest to attend, please go the university website (www.abdn.ac.uk/confucius/events/archive/february/2018/).

Founder of Moonlight Cinema, Benjamin Stonehouse, said they are really excited to return, as the company began in Scarborough originally and especially to offer a free event. He remarked that this is something new and fun for the community and hopes to offer similar events, after this one, in surrounding areas. Response is great on social media so far, with over 3,000 tickets booked, he added.
