Worthing Metal Health Awareness Week launches a series of free events
The Worthing Mental Health Awareness Week was launched at the Offington Park Methodist Church in Worthing, with the lighting of a peace candle on South Farm Road. Co-founders Carol Barber and Bob Smytherman, who was master of ceremonies, attended the event which will run Monday to Saturday, along with the mayor of Worthing, Alex Harman and the Rev Brian Penfold, the mayor’s chaplain.
Displays from organisations, charities and group are set up at an information centre. The programme has lined up a variety of talks and workshops, all designed to promote mental health. It coincides with World Mental Health Day, which will focus on keeping well in later life. Worthing Laughter Club held a Laughter for Wellness and Welbeing workshop and a Dementia Action Alliance open meet was held on Tuesday. Wednesday will see Worthing Counselling Centre hold its Come and Meet Us with a talk on Courage to Heal, which is about counselling and will be followed by a quiz at 7pm.
Promoting self care and emotional resilience will be dealt on Thursday. Spirituality and Mental Wellbeing, an informal workshop, will be held on Friday afternoon. A concert will follow at 7:30pm. The final day Saturday, will have a coffee morning from 10am to noon, to help people run through the information stand and exhibitions.
Incorporating the World Mental Health Day, the awareness week will have over 50 organisations taking part, to make it the biggest yet. Free tickets for youngsters to films at Cineworld in Llandudno Junction
Children and young people will get the opportunity to watch some of the best films for free. The venue is Cineworld, at Llandudno Junction, in Conwy of Wales, which is part of the Into Film Festival 2017. The shows at Cineworld are from 9th to 23rd November.
The festival is billed as the world’s biggest youth festival and run UK-wide for 5 to 19 year-olds, with about 200 screenings on offer throughout Wales. The event aims to engage young minds in a wide range of topics, using the magic of film. The festival aims at accessibility and inclusivity, plus has an autism friendly screening of the film – The Rock Dog. Screenings will also be going on at the Pontio in Bangor, the Scala in Prestatyn, the Vue and the Little Theatre in Rhyl. Films shown include Lego Batman, Troll, Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge and The Eagle Huntress.
Michael Sheen the Welsh Hollywood star, who is ambassador for Into Film, said that watching films had a profound effect on him as he grew up and this is not just an intellectual understanding of his, but he actually felt what it was like.
