The English Civi War returns to Barnstaple in a free week of re-enactments, packed with historical activities that culminates is a live battle in Rock Park. From 7th to 13th August Barnstable Town Council will be marking the town’s role in the English Civil War, that happened from 1642 to 1651, by hosting a packed programme, staring on Monday (7 August).
The event begins with an Open House at the Guildhall, running form 10:30am to 3:30pm, with local costumed actors giving interactive tours. The town Guildhall will also host over the week, Civil War Play in a Day for children on 9th August (Wednesday), from 10am to 4pm. It will open on Thursday, for Trepanning Through History and for children’s activities.
The Sealed Knot, the living history group, will bring to life history, from 11am to 3pm, on Saturday, at St. Anne ‘s Arts and Community Centre and a children’s workshop. The big guns will be brought out on 13 August (Sunday) , at the Rock Park with cannon and musket fining, with battle re-enactments, a living history camp, plus family fun from 11am to 3pm, that includes children’s activities, bouncy castle, face-painting and much more .
Julie Hunt, mayor of Barnstaple, said they were so excited about the week of free events, that celebrates the proud history of Barnstaple and ends in Rock Park with a re-enactment of the battle.
